Scaling & Root Planing

What is Scaling?
Scaling involves the cleaning of the crown of the tooth and the root surface. Special dental tools are used to scrape and remove plaque and calculus from these areas. Additionally, this process usually involves irrigation that delivers an antimicrobial agent to below the gums. This helps to reduce bacteria. Over time, our teeth tend to develop quite a bit of plaque. Unfortunately, this plaque is hard to remove on your own. During a cleaning, a dentist will scrape off this hard-to-reach plaque to help prevent gum disease and further issues.
What is Root Planing?
Root planing is similar to scaling but involves a much deeper clean. This process is used to remove cementum and surface dentin that is embedded with unwanted microorganisms, toxins, and tartar. Over time, tooth roots can be infiltrated with bacteria and tartar. As brushing and mouthwash do very little to fix the problem, sometimes a deep clean is needed. During root planing, the root of the tooth is smoothed to help prevent further bacterial issues. As the root is smoothed over, it then becomes very difficult for bacteria to grow.
