Do I Need Emergency Dental Care?
Generally speaking, if you need professional care to alleviate pain, stop oral bleeding, or save a tooth, then you might need to see a dentist for emergency dental care. However, it can sometimes be tough to tell whether or not a dental problem is an emergency.
The following situations are considered to be emergencies that require immediate dental or medical care.
6 Signs You Need Emergency Dental Care
1. You Have Severe Pain
Pain is the body’s way of telling you that something is wrong. If you are in severe pain that is not adequately alleviated with over-the-counter pain medications or a cold compress on the affected area, then you should seek treatment right away.
2. Your Mouth Won’t Stop Bleeding
Soft tissue (gums, cheeks, lips, and tongue) injuries in the mouth can cause bleeding. If the bleeding does not stop on its own, seek treatment immediately at the dentist’s office or the emergency room.
3. You Have an Infection
Oral infections can be serious and life-threatening in some circumstances. If you have an infection (often marked by swelling, lumps, bumps, or knots in the mouth or around the face), you should seek treatment as soon as possible.
4. You’re an Adult With a Loose Tooth
Adults should not have loose teeth. However, teeth can become loose for a variety of health-related reasons. If you have a loose tooth, you should seek treatment right away.
5. Your Tooth Was Knocked Out
Knocked-out teeth can sometimes be saved if you protect the tooth and get treatment right away. If you have a tooth knocked out, contact our office immediately for instructions on how to store the tooth and for emergency treatment.
6. You Have a Jaw Injury
Any impact or trauma to the jaw can cause oral health problems, concussions, jawbone fractures, and other serious problems.
