Good Dental Hygiene Practices
When it comes to maintaining healthy teeth and gums (and a healthy body, too), practicing good oral hygiene is essential. Healthy oral hygiene habits work together to prevent tooth decay, tooth loss, periodontal disease, and other systemic health issues that can arise as a result of poor oral hygiene.
So, what exactly is “good oral hygiene” and what do you need to do to keep your mouth healthy and sparkling?
4 Best Practices for Good Oral Hygiene
1. Don’t Just Brush – Brush Right
Brushing twice a day is a good place to start, but you also need to make sure you’re using proper brushing techniques and brushing long enough.
Use a soft-bristled toothbrush, hold it at a 45-degree angle with the bristles pointing toward your gums, and be careful not to brush too hard. (Better yet, invest in an electric toothbrush with the American Dental Association’s seal of approval.)
Spend at least 30 seconds on each quadrant of your mouth for a total of two minutes brushing.
2. Flossing Basics
The purpose of flossing is to dislodge debris caught between the teeth and to break up plaque, tartar, and bacteria that might be clinging to the sides of the enamel between your teeth.
When flossing, be sure to glide the floss between your teeth, pulling it into a “U” shape that will scrape away plaque.
3. Change Your Toothbrush
Diamonds are forever; toothbrushes are not. An old toothbrush can’t clean your teeth as effectively as a new one. So, you likely need to replace your toothbrush or electric toothbrush head at least once a month. You’ll know it needs to be replaced when the bristles no longer stand up straight, appearing bent or frayed.
4. Visit the Dentist
Regular dental checkups and professional cleanings are just as essential to daily oral hygiene maintenance. You should see the dentist at least twice a year for thorough preventative care.
