What is Root Canal Therapy?

Root canal therapy involves the treatment of a very large cavity. Once a cavity becomes large enough, the pulp inside the root canal can start to become inflamed and infected. If not treated quickly, you can risk losing your tooth. Before root canal therapy was created, dentists had no choice but to remove the tooth with the infected root canal. Nowadays, there is a highly advanced technology that makes root canal therapy easier than ever. Dentists are now able to save these teeth and revive the root.

How is the Procedure Completed?

Although there are many detailed steps that go into the process, root canal therapy involves the following four major steps:

Anesthesia

To help reduce pain and discomfort, the dentist will first administer local anesthesia via a needle. After that, a small piece of rubber, or a dental dam, might be inserted to help isolate the tooth and keep other areas clean.

Removal of Pulp

The next step involves removing the infected pulp inside the canal. The dentist will first drill a small hole in your tooth to access the root canal. The dentist will then clean away the damaged pulp, in addition to re-shaping the root and inner chamber of the tooth.

Filling

When the chamber of the tooth is clean and dry, placing the filling is the next step. Rubber-like material, called gutta-percha, is placed inside the cavity, and the opening is filled with a temporary filling until the permanent crown is inserted.

Crown Placement

After the initial procedure, you’ll need a permanent crown that will arrive in a few weeks or so. Once it arrives, the crown will be placed on top of the tooth in order to give your healing root proper protection.
