Sinus Lift Surgery

Sinus Lift Surgery

For us humans, the majority of our sinuses are located in our cheeks and face. Some of the most important sinuses are called maxillary sinuses, which are located behind your cheeks and above your upper teeth. Although these sinuses are empty, air-filled pockets, they are very important for your overall health. One way that you can see problems in your maxillary sinuses might be caused from dental work. Given that these sinuses are located just above the root of your teeth, there can be issues once you have these teeth removed. After a tooth removal, these sinuses tend to drop and cause a thinning on the bone between the maxillary sinuses and the mouth.

What is Sinus Lift Surgery?

If you’ve had a tooth removed and plan on getting a dental implant, sinus lift surgery may be needed. Sinus lifting, also called sinus augmentation, is a procedure where bone is added to your upper jaw. This is done to provide the necessary bone that is needed for a dental implant. When a tooth is removed on your upper jaw, it’s normal for the maxillary sinuses to drop and create a thin layer of protection between your tooth root and sinuses. This procedure adds artificial bone to the area to give the dental implant the bone it needs to work effectively.

Is a Sinus Lift Right for You?

Although you might now understand why this procedure is done, you may be wondering about the various conditions where this procedure is necessary. In fact, it’s important to note that missing teeth aren’t the only reason to receive a sinus lift. A sinus lift might be needed if:

  • You’re missing teeth in your upper jaw and you need a dental implant
  • There is only a small amount of bone in the back of your jaw
  • You’re missing more than one tooth in your back teeth
  • You’re missing teeth caused by a birth defect or certain condition
